We are hopping across the pond today to share our next Designer Spotlight with you: Margaret Kirkland of Margaret Kirkland Interiors is a fantastic designer based in Atlanta, Georgia with a keen eye for creating classic and elegant interiors full of antique furniture, textiles, and objects.

Margaret studied art at the University of Georgia and design at Parsons before beginning her career in New York.  She moved back home to Atlanta where she developed her signature style and classic aesthetic.  It comes as no surprise that Margaret has already achieved many accolades, including the award as Rising Star by the Atlanta Decorative Arts Center and as a featured Next Wave designer by House Beautiful.

One of our favourite rooms by Margaret is this traditional dining room, pictured above, which features traditional chinoiserie influences.  The wallpaper recalls the famous Chinese wallpaper from Georgian country houses in England, including the Chinese Drawing Room at Temple Newsam and the Chintz bedroom at Harewood House.  The Chippendale style dining chairs with the lattice back design complement the decor beautifully.  The stunning red painted door with its Asian inspired trellis carving adds the perfect colour accent.

Continuing with the chinoiserie theme, Margaret created a wonderful ensemble with this serpentine commode below a white painted rococo mirror with chinoiserie decoration, including a fantastic carved pagoda with bells at the cresting.  This mirror recalls the wonderful decoration of the Chinese Room at Claydon House, designed in 1769 by Luke Lightfoot.

Margaret presents the perfect oasis in this master bedroom with a four poster mahogany bed with ball and claw feet.  The walnut chest on chest is a classic piece for any traditional bedroom, and this one is particularly nice with its fluted canted corners and warm patina.  The small touches in the room are equally charming, including the mahogany canterbury next to the bed and red glazed vase mounted as a lamp.

We will finish with a final image from Margaret’s portfolio: this gorgeous living room is full of natural light and features a beautiful display of furniture and art throughout the room.  The Regency style green painted chairs in the background complement the colours used throughout the rest of the room, and the two large marble sculptures are framed perfectly by the large arched windows.  The celadon lamp provides another attractive green accent to the room, and the cut glass chandelier with brass detail is fitting for such an elegant and sophisticated room.  The framed portrait in the corner of the room along with the magnificent whimsical bird house both bring so much character to an already stunning space.

We look forward to seeing Margaret’s future projects as she continues to create spaces that champion the traditional, the beautiful, and the classic, all with a touch of Southern charm.  To see more of her work, have a look at her website here.
