We are delighted to share this magnificent scarlet japanned eight day clock by the London clockmaker Robert Wood.
The case is beautifully decorated with scarlet japanning and gilt chinoiseries in the manner of Stalker and Parker (read more about them here). The clock features a brass carrying handle and pineapple finials to the inverted bell top, and the sides have elaborate silk lined pierced sound frets.
The dial features foliate spandrels to a silvered chapter ring with a silvered centre and concentric date ring and signed ‘Rob.t Wood/London’, with blued steel hands to indicate the time and the date, and with a strike/ silent ring in the arch.
The movement is in excellent working order with five pillars, twin line fuses and verge escapement, strike and trip repeat on bell, and the back plate is engraved with foliate scrolls. The clock comes with a case key and a winding key.
