The quality of the japanning throughout the chest is exceptional, but opening the door allows you to see the incredibly bright colours of both the scarlet ground and gilded highlights of the birds and floral decoration.

John Stalker and George Parker’s 1688 publication ‘A Treatise on Japanning and Varnishing’ was by far one of the most influential treatises on japanned furniture in England offering both recipes for creating japanned surfaces as well as over a hundred decorative patterns in the Asian style for copying. In the discussion on creating ‘Red-Japan’ varnishes, they comment, ‘what admirable products may we expect, when a lively and unlimited fancy is exercised in an Art that is equally boundless and unconfined.’
